DFP Recruitment are proudly partnering with Open Arms who are seeking a Community and Peer Advisor within a Pilot Program, Special Forces.  The position is based in Spring Hill for an initial period of 12 months with the possibility of extension of up to 3 years.

The position of Community and Peer Advisor requires someone with unique insights into engaging with the Special Forces community.  This includes a lived experience of mental health recovery and Australian Defence Form service, as an ex-ADF member who served within or alongside Special Forces or a partner / carer of a current or ex-ADF member or served in the Special Forces. 
 
The position entails using one’s lived experience to respectfully support and educate consumers and stakeholders about recovery oriented practices and community support services. The position entails working collaboratively with key internal and external stakeholders so as to enhance the program’s ability to identify and respond to the needs of vulnerable and at risk clients and their families. The position takes a strengths-based, recovery approach to supporting vulnerable and/or at risk consumers to foster wellbeing. The position incorporates the development and maintenance of community relationships and the provision of direct support to individuals and/or their families. 
  
The role requires you to:
  • Provide mental health peer support services whilst connecting through shared lived experience to promote hope and reduce self-stigma.
  • Walk alongside Veterans and their families to increase their connectedness and belonging, assisting them to connect with activities that promote meaning and purpose and equipping them with skills and tools that build wellbeing.
  • In line with the program’s policy and procedures, provide personalised support services to clients and their families through the development of individualised strength-based assessments and plans, collaboration with others in the client’s life (including relevant service providers) and advocacy and referral (i.e., case coordination)
  • Work systemically with key internal and external stakeholders to influence a recovery approach to service delivery for vulnerable or at risk clients, communities and families, in accordance with the program’s policy and procedures.  This includes the development of a shared knowledge base that assists with informing appropriate practice and referral pathways for service access
  • Co-facilitation of relevant group programs for service consumers and providers
  • Participation in the program evaluation and research activities, contributing to project management activities that implement strategic direction and quality improvement recommendations, and provide feedback for ongoing development of clinical policies and procedures, particularly in relation to community engagement and development activities
  • Undertaking relevant training and professional development, including participation in regular supervision, case conferencing and case review meetings
  • Participating in internal and external meetings as directed.  Where appropriate, share knowledge gained through one’s relevant lived experience and recovery during team meetings to promote awareness and understanding

About you:
  • Lived experience of mental health issues and ADF service, as either an ex-ADF member who serviced within or alongside Special Forces,  or partner/carer of a current serving or ex-ADF member (spouse, ex-partner or widow/widower) who served in the Special Forces.
  • Ability to respectfully and effectively utilise this experience to promote a recovery focused approach and to mentor or support others.
  • Willingness to undertake relevant training, professional development and professional supervision, including completion of Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work.
  • Australian Citizenship
  • Must be eligible and willing to obtain a Working with Children Check
  • Must have a current driver’s licence
  • Highly desirable - Case Work and/or experience supporting veterans within the Special Forces community and/or their family members and promoting recovery orientated behaviours
  • Experience working within cross-agency programs.
