Job description

A leading national agency is seeking an experienced Media Officer to provide short-term support to its Media and Communications team. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to high-impact communications and media activities during a period of leave coverage. This is a 2 week contract commencing on July 27th - August 11th.  Sydney or Canberra location

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and manage the Media Officer inbox and respond to media enquiries
  • Oversee daily media monitoring and track emerging media issues
  • Provide strategic advice on media risks and opportunities
  • Draft media releases, pitching notes, key messages, talking points, Q&As, and other communication materials
  • Identify and pitch stories for upcoming events and award recipients
  • Coordinate interview requests, media responses, and media opportunities for spokespeople and award recipients
  • Liaise with internal subject matter experts and senior executives to develop accurate media content and messaging
  • Maintain media contact records and contribute to reporting activities
  • Assist with campaign-related publicity and stakeholder communications
To be successful in this role, you will have:
  • Demonstrated experience in media, communications, public affairs, or journalism
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with experience drafting media releases and briefing materials
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and tight deadlines
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
  • Experience in government or health communications (desirable)
  • Understanding of Australian Government communications processes (desirable)
  • Experience handling media enquiries and issues management (desirable)
  • Established media contacts across Sydney and national media outlets (desirable)
  • Experience pitching health, science, research, or public policy stories (desirable)
