Job description

The Opportunity 

On behalf of a large Federal Government Agency, we are looking for an APS6 Media and Speechwriting Officer. The roles can be based in either Geelong or Richmond and will be 12-month assignments working Monday - Friday, 37.5 hours per week. 

The Media and Speechwriting Officer will apply an understanding of the media and political landscape to deliver high-quality advice, support and direction across the Agency and external stakeholders. You will apply strategic nous in developing reactive and proactive media strategies to further the Agency’s overarching objectives.

Responsibilities will include; 
  • Managing relationships and building strong networks and connections with internal and external stakeholders, with a focus on journalists, the Minister’s office and senior stakeholders.
  • Producing media and other communications products, including media releases, talking points and media plans to support announcements.
  • Drafting strategic, targeted and tailored speeches for the Minister in diverse fora.
  • Identifying proactive opportunities for the department’s spokespeople and/or the Minister to engage with media.
  • Analysing media sentiment and data, and interpreting results to further strategic engagement.
  • Undertaking a wide variety of general tasks as required, including but not limited to, managing team priorities, providing support for reporting, analytics and executive reporting and presentations.
To be considered

You will have demonstrated experience in media, communications or journalism, paired with strong relationship management and building networks and connections with internal and external stakeholders.

In addition, you will demonstrate the following skills and experience:
  • Tertiary qualifications in public affairs, media or marketing, journalism, communications or public relations or equivalent experience
  • Experience developing media and other communications products, including media releases, talking points and media plans to support announcements.
  • Experience in building relationships both with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to respond to and prioritise competing and often urgent requests in a calm and efficient manner while also maintaining high work standards and accuracy.
  • Ability to analyse media data and interpret results to further strategic engagement is desirable
  • Experience working in a fast-paced team environment to develop strategic media, issues and reputation management approaches is desirable
  • Experience working within the disability sector is desirable
