Job description

 Manager Legal and Compliance
A large client based in Fremantle, they are Western Australia's largest and busiest general cargo port and are seeking a highly experienced Manager Legal and Compliance. The client operates through two harbours, facilitating trade vital to WA.
Contract Duration: Permanent 
Commencement: ASAP (notice periods considered) 
Location: Fremantle, WA 
Hours per Week: Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week 
Salary: Low - Mid $200k, depending on experience 
Duties and Responsibilities: 
Reporting to the General Counsel / General Manager Governance & Assurance, the role is responsible for providing high-level legal and compliance advice, managing disputes, drafting and reviewing contracts and other legal documentation. The Manager Legal and Compliance supports internal stakeholders on legislative and compliance developments and obligations to ensure alignment across the business and resolution of issues to deliver greater business efficiency.
Key duties include:
  • Research, prepare and review legal documentation including commercial agreements.
  • Provide targeted and commercially focused legal advice in relation to diverse areas of the business, including agreements, property, workplace health and safety, projects, environment, disputes, and external relations.
  • Provide leadership and management strategies for litigation, claims, and disputes.
  • Provide practical and targeted advice on legal concepts, including interpretation and application of relevant legislation.
  • Support and undertake investigations into significant incidents and oversee compliance reporting to regulatory agencies.
  • Manage day-to-day relationships with external law firms.
  • Contribute to the compliance function, including creating and maintaining legislation registers, compliance frameworks, compliance education and reporting, and allocation of accountabilities and awareness of obligations.
  • Ensure applicable legal changes are reported to the Board and Board Sub-Committees (Audit and Risk Management and People, Safety, Environment and Community) and Executive Team.
  • Manage direct reports, including formulating team objectives, operational plans, and targets to achieve corporate goals.
  • Cover for the General Counsel / General Manager Governance & Assurance in periods of absence.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Tertiary qualification in Law.
  • Legal practising certificate with at least 8 years’ PQE and in-house experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of legislative and statutory compliance environments.
  • Extensive experience in applying governance-related principles and their application in a business environment.
  • Well-developed leadership skills with previous experience managing legal teams.
  • High level attention to detail with experience in crafting policies, procedures, reports, and other written documentation.
  • Experience in any of the following would be an advantage: ports and maritime environments, construction, property, disputes, and projects.
