Job description

Our state government client is seeking an experienced AO6 Financial Accountant to play a key role in delivering high-quality financial accounting and reporting outcomes across the department. This is a senior-level role suited to a detail-oriented finance professional with strong technical accounting capability, public sector experience, and a focus on continuous improvement.


About the Role
In this role, you will be responsible for delivering accurate, compliant, and timely financial accounting services while providing expert advice to stakeholders across the business.


Key responsibilities:
  • Leading end-of-month and end-of-year financial processes, including journals, accruals, prepayments, and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Preparing financial statements and management reports in line with legislation, government policy, and internal controls.
  • Maintaining the integrity of the general ledger, including oversight of accounts payable and receivable processes.
  • Managing asset accounting activities, including capitalisation, depreciation, transfers, and disposals in accordance with relevant standards and policies.
  • Supporting budget development, forecasting, and variance analysis across the department.
  • Performing quality assurance and reconciliation activities to ensure accuracy and completeness of financial data.
  • Providing expert financial advice on accounting treatments, policies, and compliance requirements.
  • Driving business improvement initiatives, including process optimisation and system enhancements.
  • Building and maintaining strong stakeholder relationships across finance and operational teams.

About You
You will bring:
  • Proven experience in financial accounting within a complex environment, ideally within the public sector.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial reporting, reconciliations, and audit support.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve discrepancies.
  • Experience providing financial advice to stakeholders across varying levels of the organisation.
  • Well-developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Experience with TechnologyOne and advanced Excel skills.

Qualifications
A degree in accounting, commerce or business administration is highly desirable, and/or membership (or progress towards) a professional accounting body such as CA or CPA.
