Counselling and Support Officer

• Contract until June 2023
• Paying $50 - $63 per hour + super

The Australian Government has established a National Royal Commission to enquire into, and support the prevention of, the deaths associated with serving ADF. This commission is a key priority for the government.
 
The Counselling and Support Officer will report to the Assistant Director of Counselling and Support, and provide trauma-informed counselling and support for vulnerable witnesses, community forum attendees, private sessions, callers to the Enquiries line, other potential witnesses, and contributes to staff wellbeing frameworks to support staff of the Commission
 
Responsibilities:

• Liaising and coordinating with all business areas to ensure issues are addressed in a timely manner, and witnesses receive clear and consistent communication and support.
• Providing quality and timely responses to all incoming enquires and correspondence whilst maintaining confidentiality and sensitivity, including providing assistance to Telephone Support Line, as required.
• Providing clear, transparent information and responses, consistent with a trauma-informed approach, to manage escalated and complex calls or enquiries.
• Contribute to Counselling and Support Team operating frameworks, policies and procedures, and developing communication material for witnesses and clients.
• Manage electronic submissions submitted via website, and electronic and hardcopy correspondence.
• Maintain records by ensuring information is captured on all incoming phone calls, email and written correspondence relevant to the work of the Royal Commission.
• Providing support at hearings including chaperoning of witness and/or support person(s) through security, etc.
• Develop education and/or training material to equip staff when liaising with community members/witnesses.

The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate:

• Minimum qualifications are Counselling, Social Work or Psychology qualifications that meet membership requirements for the relevant associations
• At least 2 years’ experience in counselling roles, preferably with experience supporting people who have experienced trauma and working from a trauma informed practice framework.
• Highly developed sense of initiative, judgement and demonstrated willingness to be proactive and collaborative.
• Highly developed time management skills and experience working with sensitive and confidential information.
