Senior Development Expert – Software Engineer (Backend)
  • 12-month contract with possible extension
  • Locations: NSW, ACT, VIC, SA, QLD (Hybrid)
  • Must be an Australian citizen with a Baseline Security Clearance or eligibility to obtain one.
DFP Recruitment is seeking experienced Senior Development Expert - Software Engineer (Backend) to join a Federal Government client on a large-scale ICT delivery program.

Key duties and responsibilities:
  • Lead and design highly complex backend software solutions, ensuring scalability, performance, and maintainability.
  • Develop and maintain robust server-side applications and database architectures to support web platforms.
  • Analyse technical requirements and provide high-level solution design and recommendations.
  • Investigate and resolve complex ICT and backend system issues across applications and databases.
  • Develop, test, and optimise backend code, ensuring cross-browser and cross-device performance.
  • Design and implement RESTful APIs and integration solutions.
  • Optimise system architecture and database performance for high availability and reliability.
  • Collaborate with frontend developers and cross-functional teams to deliver cohesive and user-centric solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership, code documentation, and regular progress updates to stakeholders.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by staying current with emerging backend development trends and technologies.
Mandatory Requirements:
  1. Proven experience (3+ years) as a Backend Developer or Software Engineer in large-scale environments.
  2. Strong hands-on experience with programming languages such as Java (Spring preferred), PHP, Ruby and/or Python.
  3. Experience in RESTful API development and backend integration patterns.
  4. Strong knowledge of relational and document databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB, DB2).
  5. Experience with messaging and caching technologies such as Kafka and Redis.
  6. Working knowledge of Node.js and CMS frameworks.
  7. Strong understanding of the full software development lifecycle in Agile environments.
  8. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to deliver high-quality, optimised code.
Desirable:
  1. Experience in leading technical design and providing mentorship within engineering teams.
  2. Exposure to high-availability, distributed systems and performance optimisation.
  3. Experience working within government or highly regulated environments.
